Pet Peeves

Perhaps my biggest pet peeve is people ignoring traffic rules or more specifically people purposely violating traffic rules to be perceived as polite. An example of this that really gets my blood boiling is when someone is going straight or turning right but waves you through a left turn. Just go, then I can go. That's how it works.

Riding a bike makes this conundrum even worse. On my ride to work there are two 4-way stops, round trip = 4 4-way stops. In three cases I am going straight or turning left. I guess a lot of people don't understand the physics of how a bicycle works. It is much easier to resume the speed you were once traveling if you don't come to a complete stop. If another car arrives at the stop first, I start to slow down to give them time to continue through the intersection. But what typically happens is that they just SIT THERE and wait for me to come to a complete stop then wave me through. YOU ARE NOT HELPING ME ASSHOLE. Compounding this problem are the cyclists who ignore stop signs. HIT THEM.

That is all.

As I recall, you were one of the cyclists who would bust through stop signs. You even told me you acquired the ire of another cyclist for it.

However, I agree with you, most drivers are idiots.

Good memory. I had forgotten about that. Turns out that was a very similar situation. In front of me, there was a rider stopped at a stop sign and a driver waving him through. So I overtook the rider and rode through the intersection slightly ahead of him. He yelled at me for running the stop sign, but since I saw the driver waving him through, and I knew that I would ride through the intersection faster than the cyclist who was waved through I felt like I was justified.

To summarize, I can break the rules but only if I give a long and convoluted explanation.

Also as I recall, the cyclist caught up to you and pseudo-apologized for yelling, thus cementing your point.

Makes me think of bike messengers and city bike commuters. Bikes are slower than cars, and will always be so on even ground. However, cyclists continually break laws with impunity giving them the advantage in heavy traffic. Seems to me that people should expect this to happen, and plan accordingly, allowing faster traffic movement for everyone.

You are one angry cyclist. Get a car! This isn't Europe or Canada! Jesus want's you to drive an SUV.

I agree with that annoyance. Here are my rules:

1. When on a bike, follow traffic rules.
2. When breaking rule #1, yield to those people who are following the rules (e.g. if you're riding on the sidewalk, yield to pedestrians).
3. Wait your turn! Don't overtake another cyclist who is following the rules and waiting at a stop sign. When you blast through past the rule-following cyclist, they end up waiting longer (for the confusion among the cars to fade away).
4. When driving, treat cyclist like other cars, with the rights and the responsibilities that come with that. Go when it's your turn at a 4-way stop!
5. When driving, remember that cyclists can be killed, and give them the space and respect they deserve.

You damn hippies and your bikes. When Texas secedes from the Union, we will demand that everyone drive a dually (sp?)....

Its not against the law if I can't see it.

I wonder if the Smart Car will come in a dually model?

The problem is most bikers (at least around UT) don't stop at stop signs. So even if you are there first you almost have to wait to make sure the biker is going to stop, unless you want to run them over.

That's why I said to hit them. How else will they learn?
